As a General Assistant at BUILD IT, you will form a critical part of operating the store on an everyday basis and achieving customer satisfaction.

Job Description

We are currently hiring a diligent and industrious General Assistant to join our company. The best person will be expected to assist in a variety of in-store duties like customer service assistance, receipt and display management of stock, store and safety maintenance. This is an hands-on job and we are searching for someone to be willing to roll up their respective sleeves and be on their feet the bulk of their time.

Key Responsibilities

As a build it General Assistant, it will be your duty to perform the following:

1. Customer Service

  • Assist in guiding walk-in customers to select products and reassuring them of product characteristics, prices, and stock.
  • Respond in a timely and professional manner to customer queries and escalate to relevant team players if necessary.
  • Be pleasant and courteous and approachable at all times.
  • Ensure that customers are willing to leave the store.

2. Stock Receiving and Merchandising

  • Unload and accept stock deliveries in an orderly manner in compliance with store procedures and safety procedures.
  • Verify receipt notes with products received and notify discrepancies immediately.
  • Pack and stock goods attractively on display areas and shelves in accordance with merchandising strategies.
  • Rotate stock regularly to ensure that older stock is sold first (FIFO method).
  • Make sure to label prices and revise as needed.

3. Store Organization and Cleaning Keep the store premises clean, tidy, and well-maintained at all times.

  • Clean up floors by sweeping, clean shelves, and assist in keeping storeroom clean.
  • Make shopping spaces customer- and staff-safe by quickly eliminating all objects or elements posing potential risk.
  • Report to store management in case of damage, spillage, or repair needs.

4. Safety and Security

  • Comply with all health, safety, and environment requirements specified in company policy.
  • Work in a safe environment with equipment like trolleys and ladders.
  • Report promptly incidents or safety hazards witnessed.
  • Take up routine safety training and drills whenever necessary.

5. Loss Prevention and Stock Integrity

  • Be on the lookout for possible stealing, vandalism, or loss of products and notify management of anything unusual.
  • Check stock to be free of damage or defects pre and post-handling.
  • Aid in monthly stock counts and inventory audits upon the need of supervisors.
  • Keep and store stock properly to avoid loss or spoilage.

6. Team Collaboration and in-Store Support

  • Work closely with supervisors and fellow employees in attaining store objectives and accomplishing daily objectives.
  • Be ready to help and support in anything required to facilitate store-wide activities.
  • Attend staff meetings, training programs, and orientations to stay up to date on corporate affairs.
  • Be adaptable to fluctuating store requirements such as promotions, seasonal changes, and consumer demand.
  • Requirements
  • Prospects should be in possession of the following requirements in order to be eligible:
  • Educational Background: At least Std 8 (Grade 10) or NQF Level 3.
  • Physical Ability: Must be in good physical shape and capable of lifting heavy objects and standing extended periods.
  • Communication Skills: Basic written and verbal communication and numeracy skills. Ability to speak politely and respectfully to customers and colleagues.

Teamwork: A strong reliable team member who is able to work well in a dynamic fast-paced retail environment.

Flexibility: Retail hour availability to work, on weekends, public holidays and on a rotation basis.

Attention to Detail: Following instructions to the smallest of details and awareness to procedures of safety and stock.

Positive attitude, physical strength, and strong sense of duty will be beneficial while undertaking this job. Warehouse or shop experience is ideal but is not essential — full training will be given.
