Students searching for free laptops in South Africa in 2026 should be careful of social-media posts claiming that a nationwide “Student Laptop Scheme 2026” is currently accepting applications.
A recent fact-check found that a social-media message offering applications for a “students laptop scheme 2026” was a scam. (Africa Check)
The South African government has previously supported digital-learning devices through NSFAS. However, Parliament has stated that the central NSFAS Laptop Project was available for the 2021 academic year, rather than being a current nationwide 2026 laptop application. (Parliament of South Africa)
🎓 Where Students Should Check
NSFAS remains the official government financial-aid programme for eligible students at public universities and TVET colleges. Students should use the official NSFAS application information rather than links shared through WhatsApp or Facebook. (South African Government)

⚠️ Important Scam Warning
Do not pay an “application fee” for a free laptop and do not submit your ID, banking information or password to an unverified website. Always verify a laptop opportunity with the university, TVET college, NSFAS or the organisation officially offering the programme.
